Answer
i used the the Johnson's baby wash and lotion...that's all your baby needs and maybe a little powder for diaper changes...the only vitamins your baby needs at this stage in his/her life is what they get from formula and the baby foods you feed him/her...if you can try to make your own baby food as far as the veggies and fruits are concerned..and if you dont have the time buy organic baby food...u don't have have to give your baby any vitamins at this stage in life unless there is a deficiency and your pediatrician would let you know and recommend what the baby is in need of..

What are some good organic body care products for infants?

Sequoia

I'm really picky when it comes to what I'll put on my baby's skin. I don't want anything with sodium benzoate (carcinogen) in it- alot of organic products have that in their list of ingredients.
I like Earth Mama Baby Angel's product ingredients. However, I've heard that essential oils in baby products could be irritating (don't know if it's true or not). Otopia claims to have all the things I like, but NOWHERE on their website lists the ingredients and I don't want to spend a bunch of money online buying things I won't want when they get to my house..
Does anyone have any opinions on essential oils in baby products or organic product buying tips?
Thanks.

Answer
Essential oils in baby products are usually beneficial more than anything, companies that make organic products do the research & wouldn't put something in their products that would cause irritation, they know the buyers of their products are wise on matters like these so I wouldn't worry about that.

As for a good organic brand you just cannot go past Weleda, they have the most amazing baby products around, their calendula oil is sensational & their calendula nappy change cream is so good my eight month old has never so much as had a red bottom! Their teething powder's good too, it's all excellent!

organic baby food vs. making my own?

Q. i still have quite a while before my son will need baby food, but i was curious as to what you guys think about the whole organic vs. making the food thing. With my daughter i started out making the baby food but it got to be such a hassle i started buying the organic foods and she loved them. That was 4 years ago though and they are more expensive now i was just curious what other parents are doing about the baby food situation if i should suck it up and just buy the organic foods at 95 cents a jar or just make my own any input is greatly appreciated.

Answer
In all honesty you are better off making your own baby food. I have a child who had severe food allergies so it was better for me to make his so I knew every ingredient and there were no additives. To this day his docs do not want him to have resturant food. The food you make for your child will be healthier than the store bought, this is also coming from the nutritionist that took care of my son.

Am I wasting my money buying natural baby skin care products?

Do organic and 'earth friendly' baby products really make a difference?

Answer
No. I'd say that using organic products is probably the only way to ensure that your baby isn't coming into contact with the harmful chemicals that are included in some big-brand products.

If you read the small print on the back of some baby products, you'll see that they can contain nasty chemicals like butylparaben, ethylparaben and methylparaben (which can cause allergic reactions); Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (a corrosive cleaning agent); and Lauramide DEA, which has been connected to skin allergies, scalp itching and dermatitis.

The Earth Friendly Baby range is good - I don't know if you're already using it.

Organic Products?

I have been getting into organic products latley and i was just wondering what is a really good organic fash wash that i can use? I have combination skin with the occasional breakout (which im going through right now). I also have a lot of scars and redness left over from previous acne. My skin is pretty sensitive so anything that can work with my skin type would be great! thank you so much! =)

Also if there are any other organic products you could show me such as hair products, sunscreen, lotion, ect. that work good please tell me about them! thnx!

Answer
Not sure I could recommend a specific product, but be careful when choosing any personal care product. The labeling can be confusing. Don't buy into a product just because it says "organics" on it, because it doesn't necessarily mean anything.

* The FDA does not define or regulate the term "organic," as it applies to cosmetics, body care, or personal care products.
* The USDA regulates the term “organic” as it applies to agricultural products through its National Organic Program (NOP) regulation, 7 CFR Part 205.
* If a cosmetic, body care product, or personal care product contains or is made up of agricultural ingredients, and can meet the USDA/NOP organic production, handling, processing and labeling standards, it may be eligible to be certified under the NOP regulations.
* The operations which produce the organic agricultural ingredients, the handlers of these agricultural ingredients, and the manufacturer of the final product must all be certified by a USDA-accredited organic certifying agent.
* Once certified, cosmetics, personal care products, and body care products are eligible for the same 4 organic labeling categories as all other agricultural products, based on their organic content and other factors.
* Any cosmetic, body care product, or personal care product that does not meet the production, handling, processing, labeling, and certification standards described above, may not state, imply, or convey in any way that the product is USDA-certified organic or meets the USDA organic standards.
* The USDA has no authority over the production and labeling of cosmetics, body care products, and personal care products that are not made up of agricultural ingredients, or do not make any claims to meeting USDA organic standards.
* Cosmetics, body care products, and personal care products may be certified to other, private standards and be marketed to those private standards in the United States. These standards might include foreign organic standards, eco-labels, earth friendly, etc. USDA’s NOP does not regulate these labels at this time.

It's important to try to avoid products with these ingredients, also:

1. Phthalates: Studies have shown a connection between this chemical and genital abnormalities in baby boys. Avoid products that list "fragrance" as an ingredient, and look for ones that tell you what the fragrance is from (i.e. essential oils, mint, etc.).
2. Parabens: Very common in personal care products, these have been shown to be weak estrogen mimicking chemicals, and have been found in biopsy samples of breast tumors.
3. Coal Tar: A possible cancer risk, as warned by the FDA in 1993. Can be found in many hair dyes and strong psoriasis and dandruff shampoos.
4. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): May cause scalp irritation and hair loss by stripping away protective lipids and attacking the hair follicle.

You would be surprised how many personal care products have parabens and SLS or SLES. Most have "fragrance," as well.

Do you use organic bath/beauty products for your kids?

Q. Where do you buy them? What are your favorite brands and products?
Miley... bath & beauty products go together. This can include lotions or powders, etc. Not just makeup. ;)

Answer
I don't know that they are technically "organic" products, but the products that I use are all natural ingredients.

I use the ABC baby line from Arbonne Skin Care. It's sold through Arbonne reps (like Mary Kay or Avon), but the company has a website where you can find someone in your area. The products are free of all the mineral oils and fragrance and chemicals that are commonly found in any type of bath/beauty products. They are all natural and water based.

My son has SUPER sensitive skin, and was starting to develop patches of eczema on his arms and legs. I had been using Burt's Bees Baby Care (which I loved btw because it is almost 100% natural), however the fragrance that is in the Burt's Bees was probably causing the irritation for my son. The ABC Arbonne products have been great, his eczema is completely gone and he hasn't had dry skin at all since I started using them.

Products available: body lotion, body oil, hair/body wash, baby sunscreen (great that it's all natural so that if his hand goes in his mouth after the sunscreen, it's not a problem), and they have a diaper cream as well that seriously clears up any type of redness in less than a few hours!!

The price is comparable to Burt's Bees... I think for the entire set of 5 items (that also came with a full size face cream for me for free) was $82. It averages out to about $16/item.... but I've been using it exclusively for the past 2 months now and haven't even gone through 1/3 of the bottles yet.

Hope that helps. They also have adult products and stuff as well I think.... don't know the details on the rest of their stuff, but I love the baby products!

Is organic baby formula better and worth the extra cost?

sonia guti

Answer
It just depends on what you care about as a mother. There are pros and cons to everything. Obviously the healthiest source of food for an infant is breastmilk.

If you have the money to spring for organic formula, it definitely couldn't hurt. I can't think of a more important time in a person's life to make sure their food source is as healthy as possible.

BEECH-NUT or Gerber Baby Food?

Mrs. K

I am going to start my son on baby food. Beech-Nut was not around for my daughter. Which is better or is there a difference?

Answer
Well, there is a difference between them. And you can find the difference just by looking at the ingredients on the bottles. Gerber has many additives in their bottled foods whereas Beach Nut does not. Beach Nut is also natural and organic whereas with Gerber you have to buy organic jars to get organic. Once you get to stage 3 and graduates there are even more ingredients in Gerber, and some of them are even listed as the allergy causing foods I know that some one has contacted Gerber about that and they said that because these ingredients can be allergenic for some (meaning not for all) they can’t remove them or adjust the recipe. Our Pediatrician prefers Beach Nut for all three of the children. My baby eats Beach Nut jar food and cereal. She loves the meats and they do taste like the real thing. Beach Nut is also a small company so they take quality into great consideration of there is ever a complain they actually care whereas Gerber is so huge a complain form one person is not going to have any effect on the company. Beach nut specializes in baby food only whereas Gerber does a dozen different things. I don’t have anything against Gerber, I actually like them but not in baby food. Your second best choice after Beach Nut is Earth’s Best, but they also have added ingredients in them. Also for some reason Earth’s Best, especially cereal, is often expired so make sure to look at the expiration date for everything you buy.
You might also try cooking foods you’re your baby at home, that is the healthiest thing you can do. Do not cook carrots, broccoli, beans and peas at home. They tend to emit a bi-product when cooked that is not so good for the babies, commercial foods do not have that bi-product in them. Their cooking method eliminates it.
Sweet potatoes/butternut squash- bake in the oven until you can poke through it with a fork. Blend or when the baby is older mash with a fork.
Steam apples/pears/peaches/cauliflower for 5-10 minutes and blend. First remove the skin and pit them.
White potatoes-cook until done and blend. Do not add any spices.
Avocado/mango/banana/papaya-pit and skin, blend or mash with a fork for an older baby
You can even make the meats at home. Use breasts or the softest meat parts, cook the breast in whole milk (baby must be at least 6 month old) until well done and blend in a mixer.
Flaked fish that is steamed, broiled or baked without any spices and is carefully checked for bones can also be fed after 7 month.
You can combine the foods together for a variety of flavors. The home cooked meals will stay freash for 2-3 days and can be frozen (Avocado/mango/papaya can’t be frozen). You can place them in ice trays for perfect portions and once they are frozen pop them out and place in zip bags. Frozen food is good for up to 3 month in the freezer.

Does anyone have the Baby Bjorn Active carrier?

JJLICIOUS

How do you like it?
What are the pros and cons?
Is it easy to use by yourself?
Does it work well for a newborn?

I am considering buying one, any feeedback would help. Thanks!

Answer
I LOVE bjorns! I think it is such a wonderful experience to be close to a baby and bond with them by holding them. I prefer bjorns to strollers, I think the babies prefer them too, they feel safe and loved : ) One baby I cared for as a nanny loved her bjorn, I think she thought she was walking, lol! Also, a great way to get your baby to laugh is put him/her in the bjorn and then go to a mirror and bounce up and down making silly noises. He/she will see you two laughing in the mirror and start having a blast.

I have used the bjorn active carrier It's amazing. Cozy and easy on your back! Now you'll need a new one once she/he is 25 pounds or so, but the older bjorn types are great too.

Oh, and get the organic version please. Better for your baby (not inhaling all of the fumes from flame retardants, dyes, etc), better for the earth and it will make the statement to your friends that green parenting can be done!
