What are good Toddler formulas?

Q. What's the difference between baby formulas from toddler formulas

Answer
Just about any formula that is made for toddlers is good enough. The difference is that toddler formulas are made to be a supplemental part of their nutritional needs, it's expected the toddler is eating solids and isn't needing as much formula. It's usually not as broken down, and has nutritional needs to suit a toddler. Infant formulas are usually more broken down and are expected to be the only food they're eating, so they have more nutrition.

Since not every baby can digest cow's milk after a year old, and the risk for anemia is greatest from the ages 1-3 because of children not eating a wide variety of food as well as cow's milk interfering with iron absorption, toddler formula is made for that reason. The majority of toddlers can drink cow's milk without problem and the majority get the bulk of their nutrition from solids and don't need formula, but if I remember right the numbers are somewhere around 85% at a year, leaving 15% of toddlers vulnerable. This is right in line with how many toddlers tend to develop anemia (anywhere from 11-20% of children will become anemic with those 2 and under at greatest risk-link 1.)

Keep in mind also that breastfeeding past a year is not seen as 'unnecessary' but that it helps the toddler transition to eating solids and keeps them from cow's milk (which again can cause anemia.) It's perfectly alright to breastfeed until 2 years old and is often recommended and strongly encourage mothers to breastfeed past a year, but the same hypocrites will say that formula past a year is unneeded and a gimmick. If breastfeeding past a year is good, then formula (which is closer to breastmilk than cow's milk is) is good as well. If a toddler is found to be anemic and it's interfering with development, even if you reverse the anemia, the retarded development continues. (link 2, note this link talks about the recommended use of toddler formula until age 2.)

When a toddler is started on cow's milk, they are recommended to keep it under 16-24oz in a day, if they need more than that then it's wise to use formula rather than give them more milk than that and risk anemia.

Also if a toddler is diagnosed as anemic their doctor or nutritionist may suggest a toddler formula. This has happened so many times in my family from kids switched to cow's milk at a year old, many of them switched from breastmilk I want to point out, but the kids didn't handle the cow's milk and became anemic and rather than giving an iron supplement (and still having the cow's milk interfere with iron absorption and cause problems with microtears in intestines, both causing anemia), they were put on a toddler formula until 2 years, at which point they switched to cows' milk with no problem.

In cases where the toddler has allergies (which can resolve by the time they are two) toddler formulas help a parent to get the nutrition their toddler needs while working with dietary restrictions. For example, my great-nephew is allergic to cow's milk, they found this out when he turned one and they put him on milk (he was breastfeeding before then.) Since my niece's milk was gone by that point, they had a choice of soy-milk (which has risks with iron and calcium as well as extremely low-fat for a toddler) or soy-toddler-formula which doesn't have those risks as much. The soy-toddler-formula was cheaper, and they could make only what they needed, while working with a nutritionist to figure out what would help him. His milk allergy continued well past 3, but by that point they had a good diet in hand.

Enfagrow Older Toddler vs Enfagrow PREMIUM Toddler?

syan8182

This is confusing, on their website

Enfagrow PREMIUM Toddler, stage 2, 9 month up
Enfagrow Older Toddler, stage 3, 1 year up

What kind of advertisement is this? so how long should my kid take stage 2 then move onto 3?

Answer
Actually both are Enfamil Premium, but one is toddler and the other is older toddler. The older Toddler formula is usually flavored, and was introduced with a chocolate flavoring as well as vanilla. A lot of parents got in arms about it having flavoring, although that was always optional since there was the normal toddler formula. It was not recommended to have any flavoring though until they were older and it was a supplement (ie, not the majority of their diet.) So it was always offered at past a year with flavoring.

However, in some countries like Canada the recommendation is to move off of formula at 10 months old. In the US, the recommendation is to keep a baby on formula or breastmilk until a full year old, the number of toddlers who have problems with iron (anemia) from being moved to cow's milk being the support for the US's recommendation. Enfamil serves both countries though, so in Canada it makes sense to have a cheaper toddler formula from 9 months on. The normal toddler formula is meant as a weaning milk, something safe you can use to fill in the holes in a child's nutrition, until they show they are ready for normal cow's milk.

A baby is ready for normal cow's milk when they
-need less than 16-24 oz in a day (drinking too much = anemia)
-do not take it in a bottle but in a sippy cup. (bottles = guzzling. Drinking too much too fast = anemia.)
-are eating enough solids that it's really just a supplement and not the bulk of their nutrition.
-if breastfed, have been tested on their iron levels (formula has so much iron that there's little chance of that.)
-does not have dietary upset from cow's milk.

During the time when you're moving a toddler from formula to normal milk, they don't exactly need a baby's formula and it as processed as a baby's formula, so it makes sense to have a cheaper toddler formula to use for weaning. Note, the offer the normal toddler formula in soy and gentle-ease for those babies with other dietary concerns as well. For a baby weaning from soy formula, it makes sense to avoid soy milk because it interferes with calcium and iron absorption, until they're 2-3 years old.

Once your baby is weaned, if you find yourself worrying about nutrition and wanting a 'healthier' flavored milk alternative, Enfamil Premium Older Toddler flavored vanilla is an option to go against Similac's Pediasure. Somehow, people see Pediasure as better than flavored formula (even though that's all Pediasure IS.) But basically it's just Enfamil's version, which is cheaper per oz and you don't have to worry about what to do with leftover or anything. But it's for the 'after they're weaned' crowd, thus why it's for a year up, and why it's flavored.

Most kids never need the stage 3. As far as how long your child may need stage 2 is up to how their own body reacts and decides. My daughter was sick from cow's milk until she hit 20 months old, my son lasted until 21 months. 12 months is the earliest age in America recommended by doctors, 10 months the earliest in Canada and some other countries, but that's not to say every baby is ready at that age and there seems to be a family trait for us. Of the kids in my family, my kids have never had anemia problems where as all the other toddlers that I know of had major anemia problems from switching at a year old. So for me and mine, I'm grateful for toddler formula and don't see it as any sort of nefarious scheme.

Does your toddler (survey)?

13) How many children do you have?

14) How many children do you want to have?

15) Did / do you have to deal with the terrible two's?

16) Does your toddler bite (or hit, scratch, etc.)?

Answer
Before we begin:
- How old is your toddler? 21 months
- Girl or boy? girl

1) When did your toddler start walking by himself? a week before her first birthday

2) If breastfeeding, how long do you plan on breastfeeding? she just weaned at 18 months (i'm pregnant and we were having some problems) but she is still very boob oriented and I would not be surprised if she resumed nursing when her bro is born in a few weeks.

3) At what age did you begin potty training? We started around 18 months off and on but I'm holding out until after the new baby is born (she will be turning 2 shortly after)

4) At what age did you finish potty training? not done

5) Where does your toddler sleep? In bed with us, occasionally in her bed in our room

6) When did you move your child to a toddler bed? I set the toddler bed up a few months ago

7) How much milk does your toddler drink? Not too much. Probably 8-12 oz. a day. I dislike cow's milk and prefer to offer her other high calcium foods and water rather than hormone and pus filled cow breastmilk.

8) Is your toddler sleeping through the night? yes

9) When did your toddler stop using a bottle? never used one

10) How many words (besides mama/dada) did your toddler know at 18 months (or how old are they now and how many do they know)? Hahahha... I couldn't even count. About 100 maybe? She was a very fast speaker

11) When did your toddler give up sucking on his thumb or pacifier (or have they not yet)? Never did either

12) When do you / when did you plan on changing to low fat milk (versus formula or breast milk)? Once she turns 2 I want to switch to 1% or fat free or just go back to rice milk

13) How many children do you have? Just her and one boy due Aug 10

14) How many children do you want to have? 2

15) Did / do you have to deal with the terrible two's? I think they're starting now!

16) Does your toddler bite (or hit, scratch, etc.)? No, she has done that once or twice but we put a stop to it. Mostly by saying "NO! That hurts mommy" and acting hurt or even fake crying. She immediately stopped and gave me hugs and kisses, lol... She understood that it hurt and not to do it.

Vegetarian toddler recipes?

Q. ive been searching the web, and cant find much. if anyone has any QUICK and SIMPLE vegetarian (doesnt have to be vegan) toddler recipes (mainly looking for lunch and snack ideas), please share! thank you!!

Answer
Toddler-age favourites here (vegetarian family) --

saucy rice and beans (make a load of 'sofrito' -- onions, garlic, tomatoes, peppers, cilantro, olive oil, and cook your rice and beans in the resulting sauce) -- this freezes perfectly

whole wheat mini pitas topped with pesto, chopped veg (onion, broccoli, red pepper, artichoke hearts, etc), cheese; bake half-way, freeze, pop in toaster oven as needed

quiche and omelettes

cheese arepas http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Fried-Masa-Cakes-with-Cheese-Arepas-de-Queso-103390

broccoli and ditali with tomato sauce and cheese -- sort of like http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Baked-Penne-with-Broccoli-and-Three-Cheeses-107638 -- also freezes wonderfully

very easy soup: saute minced onions and celery -- add a litre of veg stock -- can of tomatoes -- can of tomato paste if you like thick broth -- three cans of beans/legumes; lentils, black beans, and chick peas are a nice combo -- simmer -- again, easy to freeze

toast bread with cheese, cook an egg, slap the egg into the cheesy bread so it stays glued together and your toddler can hold and eat the sandwich without it falling apart -- good for mornings when it's nice out and you'd like to take a walk down the street with your breakfast

don't overlook nuts -- car trips = bags of sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds (lots of iron!), walnuts, almonds, peanuts, etc -- use common sense when assessing choking risks here; mince the nuts a bit if need be

What age is a toddler?

Q. When does a baby turn into a toddler (age or milestone?) and when does it stop being a toddler(age or milestone)?
This question hs been baffling me for a while. Thanks a bunch for the feedback.

Answer
Toddler is a term for a child between the ages of one and three years old (some may consider a toddler to be between two and five.) Generally, after the child has passed the period of infancy (from birth to 1 year) the chid enters the stage as toddlers which is until 3 years. Past 3 years until 6 years are then called pre-schoolers.♥

Activities for toddlers?

Q. I'm in school and working in a toddler room. Each week I go I need to bring in an activity for the kids. I've never worked with toddlers before and so what are some fun activities I can bring in for the kids?

Answer
Toddlers love art and sensory. I would staple a few pieces of white copy paper together with a piece of construction paper folded in half making like a book or journal and let them go crazy with crayons. Another idea cut out shapes from construction paper and have them glue them on a bigger piece of paper and make a shape collage. Another idea let them finger paint (make sure you put a few pumps of liquid hand soap in the paint so it will come off of them with water and out of their clothes in the wash). Another idea do a hand print or foot print collage. Paint their hand or foot and make a few prints using two or three different colors and laugh with them as it tickles when you use the paint on their hand or foot.
Ok some sensory ideas now. Use a bucket with some water in it and just let them splash around of add some items that will float like tennis balls, corks, foam or some sort. Or add stacking cups and measuring cups. Use flour or cornstarch(messy but they love it) put some spoons in it for them to use to scoop with. Another idea is to make no bake playdoh. The recipe is online and easy to make. They love to help. They also usually like sticky things. Use contact paper and have them stick colored feathers or small pieces of construction paper to it. (about 1 X1 in squares in different colors)
Another idea that came to me is cooking. Have the kids make rice crispy treats. Have them measure the cereal and pour it into a bowl, help them measure the marshmallows and pour them into the bowl. then tell them you are going to take it to the kitchen and cook them unless they have a microwave in the room and they can eat them for snack. They also like to make jello. They also like to make gak and no bake playdoh. I made blueberry muffins and brownies once to. Just check for allergies before doing this.
Hope this helps. I have many more ideas. E-mail: pstanglein@gmail.com

smoothie to toddler?

a 1

Is smoothie or milk shake good for toddler ,whats the best time to give my toddler smoothie or milkshake

Answer
Yes, a toddler can definatly have that, a milk shake might not be as good of an idea because it could hurt their stomach and isnt good nutrition, if they have just little one though then that should be fine, like just a littlebit though/ about 1/2 of a small one or less because its not healthy and they are growing so they need proper nutrition. A smoothie is really good for toddlers though, just make sure it isn't like freezing cold so they dont get a brain freeze and start crying because their head hurts, but a smoothie is excellent for a toddler because it is a way for them to recieve a lot of fruit and vegtables they normally wouldnt eat

Baby to toddler?

Q. When is a baby considered a toddler. Is it when they can successfully walk or is it earlier?

Answer
I think of a toddler starting at 1 to 1.5 years old. Old enough to walk around (even if they fall a little bit). have lots of personality!, speak some, and eating some regular food.

I have read one book that considered 9 month olds toddler, i dont agree with that at all. My son is almost 9 months, and he is crawling - pulling himself up and trying to walk, and only says a few words. I think of him as just barely beginning to transition into a toddler, but by no means a toddler. He learns something new all the time...its very different now, compared to a few months ago. he is starting to mock everything and develop an even stronger personality.

Traveling with a toddler?

Q. So in about two months I will be flying with my 18 month old from Massachusetts to Texas. The flight is a little over three hours. My toddler is very wriggly and hasn't even been in a car for longer than two hours (in which she got fussy towards the end). Im traveling by myself with her and I'm just a little nervous that she's gonna freak out on the plane. I have pretty bad anxiety and claustrophobia so the thought of being inclosed on a plane with my screaming child all by myself sounds incredibly overwhelming. anyone flown with their toddler and have any good tips? Did your toddlers cry?

Answer
Traveling with a toddler can be stressful but in my experience it goes better than you might think. Try and make sure your toddler has a nap before the flight if possible. During the flight, make sure you change things up so your toddler doesn't get bored. Play for 20 minutes, then walk him down the aisle to the bathroom and back. Have a snack. Then go for another short walk. My toddler could stand in front of the chairs so she doesn't have to sit all the time - as long as the seatbelt sign isn't on.

Here are some items to bring on the plane: stickers, small toys that aren't choking hazards, notepad and crayons, lots and lots of NEW snacks that you can bring out one at a time, your iPhone or Ipad if you have one, or other electronic device. You can also use the plane TV if your plane has individual screens. Just alternate things and if he cries, walk her up and down the plane. To help with ear pain, bring chewy snacks to help pop the ears.

It is tough but they are all strangers that you'll never see again. Do your best and you'll be ok.

Sims 2 toddlers?

inbling

Hi i just got the Sims 2! But i dont no how to look after a little toddler. How do u make it sleep, eat (basicly how do u fill its motives)
Thank you!=P

Answer
Ok firstly, you need to buy a cot. Go on to the buy box (where you buy furniture...) and there should be 3 dots. If you hover over this , a caption should come up and its called miscellenas or something like that. Click on that and you have a choice to buy party stuff, or toddler stuff. The toddler stuff is the one with a bear icon. There you can find lots of things for your toddler.
For food you can get your adult to go to the fridge and get a bottle for your toddler.
A toddlers wants is normally to be taught how to walk , talk , or be potty trained.
To teach them how to walk and talk, simply have your adult sim to select the toddler and choose the option Teach to talk / Teach to walk. The adult should then begin to do any of these with the toddler.

To potty train however, you will need to buy a potty from the same place i directed you to buy a cot. Then again get an adult to select the potty. The option should come up as Potty Train _Jack___ for example. The adult will then take your toddler and place him on the potty.
To clean your toddle, by a sink or bath and get your adult to bathe your toddler.
Hope this helps !!

  1. Toddler Formula as you said is a supplementary milk to support our child nutrient needs, especially when they are in the weaning part. These Q&As are very useful for new mums like me.
